Scrap Steel and Stainless in Sydney
Steel is the heaviest thing most clear-outs produce and the lowest paid per kilo, so it is the metal where how you move it matters most. We buy four grades: heavy melting steel, light iron, and two grades of stainless.
Stainless is the one to look out for. It is steel with chromium and nickel in it, it does not rust, and it pays well above ordinary steel. Sorting it out of a steel load is the easiest way to lift what the load is worth.

How to sort your steel
Thick steel: beam, plate, heavy pipe
Heavy melting steel, cut to a size a furnace can take.
Thin steel: roofing iron, whitegoods, shelving
Light iron. Fridges and freezers must be degassed first.
Stainless benches, sinks and tanks
The everyday stainless, from kitchens and fabrication.
Stainless off boats, pools and chemical plant
Marine-grade stainless. Keep it apart from 304 if you know which it is.
The magnet test, and where it stops
Ordinary steel grabs a magnet. 304 and 316 stainless do not, or only faintly at edges and welds where the metal has been worked. So a magnet sorts stainless from steel in seconds, but it cannot tell 304 from 316. We test that at intake rather than guess.
For a demolition, a factory clear-out or a fabrication shop, steel is a volume job. A bin dropped on site usually beats carting it in trailer loads.
Sealed vessels, like closed drums and tanks, are not accepted in either steel grade.
Common questions
- How much is scrap steel worth in Sydney?
- Steel is bought by weight at a lower rate than non-ferrous metal, and heavy and light steel are priced apart. Stainless pays well above both. Call or WhatsApp for today’s rate.
- What is the difference between heavy steel and light iron?
- Thickness. Heavy melting steel is thick: beam, plate and heavy pipe. Light iron is thin: roofing iron, sheet, whitegoods and shelving.
- Do you take whitegoods?
- Yes, as light iron. Fridges and freezers must be degassed by a licensed technician first.
- Can you put a bin on site for scrap steel?
- Yes. We drop bins for demolition, strip-outs and ongoing production scrap. There is a minimum for bin drops, so call and tell us roughly what you have.
