Scrap Stainless Steel Sinks and Benches

Stainless steel sinks, benchtops, splashbacks and commercial kitchen equipment are bought as Stainless Steel 304, which pays well above ordinary steel.

The grade is decided by what is still attached. Taps, laminate and steel brackets from a kitchen strip-out all count against the weight, and the taps are worth more off than on.

What comes out of a kitchen strip-out

  • Sink bowls, benchtops and splashbacks

    Kitchen stainless, bought as 304.

  • Taps and mixers

Chrome-plated brass. Off the sink, they are paid as brass.

  • Steel brackets, frames and legs

If a magnet grabs it firmly, it is steel, not stainless: light iron.

Before you bring it

  1. 01Take the taps off.
  2. 02Strip laminate, chipboard and rubber feet from benches.
  3. 03Run a magnet over frames and legs, and put anything it grabs in a separate pile.

Common questions

Are stainless steel sinks worth anything as scrap?
Yes. They are bought as 304 stainless, well above ordinary steel. Call or WhatsApp for today’s rate.
Do I need to take the taps off a sink?
It helps. Taps are brass, so off the sink they are paid as brass, and the stainless grades clean.
Is my sink 304 or 316 stainless?
Kitchen sinks are almost always 304. 316 is the marine grade, used near salt water and in chemical plant.
My sink grabs a magnet. Is it still stainless?
A faint pull at worked edges and welds is normal for 304. If it grabs a magnet firmly all over, it is a magnetic stainless, which is not 304. Send us a photo.
