Scrap Fridges and Washing Machines
Yes. Fridges, freezers, washing machines, dryers and dishwashers are bought as light iron, the grade for thin steel. A fridge or freezer must be degassed by a licensed technician before it comes in, the same as an air conditioner.
Whitegoods are mostly thin steel casing, the lowest-paid grade by weight, so they are worth most as part of a bigger load: a clean-out, a renovation, or a few at once.

The cabinet and frame
Thin steel casing, bought as light iron.
Fridge and freezer compressors
The sealed black unit at the back. Once degassed and drained, it can be cut out and is bought as a grade of its own.
Washing machine motors
Bought whole, on the copper winding inside.
Before you bring them
- 01Fridges, freezers and anything else that holds refrigerant: degassed by a licensed technician first. We cannot degas them at the yard.
- 02Empty them: food out of fridges, water out of washing machines.
- 03For more than a couple, call about a pickup. There is a minimum, so tell us roughly how many you have.

- Does a washing machine have scrap value?
- Yes. The cabinet is light iron and the motor is bought on its copper winding.
- Why does a fridge have to be degassed?
- Fridges hold refrigerant gas, which it is an offence to release. It must be recovered by a licensed technician before the fridge can be scrapped.
- Do you take dryers and dishwashers?
- Yes, as light iron, with the water emptied out.
