Scrap Aluminium in Sydney
Aluminium turns up in more shapes than any other metal: alloy wheels, window frames, engine castings, pots and pans, and plenty of pieces with steel still bolted through them. We buy five aluminium grades.
The difference between them is mostly about what else is attached. The cleaner the aluminium, the better the grade, and a magnet is all you need to check.

How to tell your aluminium apart
Alloy wheels
Car wheels with the tyres, valves and balance weights off. Steel wheels are not this grade.
Window frames and profiles
Extrusions with the glass, rubber seals and steel screws taken out.
Engine and machine parts
Thick castings such as gearbox housings, cylinder heads and pump bodies, drained of oil.
Pots, pans and household aluminium
Clean of food, with iron handles off.
Aluminium with steel through it
Pieces where the steel will not come off, like castings with bearings in or screen doors with steel mesh.
Check it with a magnet
Aluminium is not magnetic, so a magnet is the quickest way to find steel hiding in a load. If it sticks, there is steel there: a screw, a bracket, an insert. Take it off if you can. If you cannot, the piece belongs in irony aluminium.
Clean is worth more than heavy. The yard pays for the aluminium, not for the glass, rubber and steel that have to come out of it, so a stripped load grades better than a bigger one that still needs the work.
Aluminium radiators are bought as a radiator grade, not with the aluminium here: see motors, radiators and AC units.
Common questions
- How much is scrap aluminium worth in Sydney?
- Each of the five grades has its own rate, and clean grades pay more than irony aluminium. The rate moves with the aluminium market. Call or WhatsApp for today’s rate.
- How do I know if something is aluminium?
- It is light for its size and a magnet will not stick to it. If a magnet sticks, it is steel, or there is steel attached.
- Do you take aluminium with steel bolted on?
- Yes, as irony aluminium. If the steel comes off easily, take it off first and the aluminium grades higher.
- Do I need to take the glass out of old windows?
- For the extrusion grade, yes. A frame with the glass, seals and steel screws out is clean extrusion; with them still in, it is a mixed item.
