Scrap Brass in Sydney
Brass is the yellow metal in taps, valves, plumbing fittings, keys and ornaments. It is priced below copper and well above steel, and a box of old tapware is one of the things most often thrown out that should not be.
We buy it in two grades. Coast brass is clean, unplated yellow brass. Everything else, plated, with steel in it, or mixed, is gun metal and mixed brass.
Which brass grade is yours
Taps, valves and plumbing fittings
Chrome-plated is fine. Take off steel screws and plastic handles.
Clean sheet, cut-offs and turnings
Unplated, with no iron or solder. Keep turnings free of steel swarf and cutting oil.
Brass fittings cut off copper pipe
Cut off and kept apart, they go as mixed brass and the copper grades higher too.
Brass, copper or something else?
Brass is yellow and copper is reddish-brown, and neither sticks to a magnet. If something yellow does stick, it is brass-plated steel, not brass.
Weight is the other clue. Solid brass is heavy for its size. A brass-look fitting that feels light may be plated zinc or plastic. If you are not sure, send a photo or bring it in and we will grade it on the scales.
