Scrap Hot Water Systems
Yes, we take old hot water systems, electric and gas. Most are a steel tank inside a steel jacket, which is bought as light iron. The brass valves and copper pipe on them are separate, better-paid grades, and worth taking off.
A heat-pump unit is different: it holds refrigerant, so like an air conditioner it has to be degassed by a licensed technician before it comes in.
What is inside one
The tank and outer jacket
Steel, with foam insulation between them. Bought as light iron.
A copper cylinder, in older units
Some older systems have a copper inner tank. Stripped of the steel jacket and insulation, it is worth substantially more than the whole unit.
Valves and fittings
The relief valve, tempering valve and fittings are brass.
Copper pipe tails
Cut off at the connections. Clean lengths go as No. 1, soldered ends as No. 2.
The heat pump, on heat-pump units
Degassed first. Its compressor is bought as a grade of its own.
Before you bring it
- 01Have it disconnected properly. Gas and electric hot water systems should be disconnected by a licensed plumber or electrician.
- 02Drain it completely. A full tank carries its own volume in water: a 250-litre tank is a quarter of a tonne.
- 03Cut off the brass valves and the copper pipe, and keep them apart from the tank.
- 04Heat-pump units: have the refrigerant recovered by a licensed technician first.
Common questions
- Can you scrap a hot water heater?
- Yes. Drained, the tank is bought as light iron, and the brass valves and copper pipe are paid separately if you take them off.
- How much is a hot water system worth at a scrap yard?
- Most of the weight is steel, the lowest-paid grade, so the brass and copper on it make the real difference. Call or WhatsApp for today’s rate.
- Can you collect an old hot water system?
- There is a minimum for pickups, so a single unit is usually best brought in, or added to a bigger load. Call and we will tell you straight away.
Getting today’s rate
Rates follow the metal market and change through the week. Send a photo on WhatsApp or call the yard, tell us roughly how much you have, and we will tell you the grade and today’s rate.
