About Electric Motors
Electric motors are bought whole, on the copper winding inside them. Pumps, fans, power tools, industrial drives, washing machine motors and workshop equipment all qualify.
The value is in the ratio of copper to steel, so a heavy motor with substantial windings is worth more per kilo than a small one with a large steel housing. There is no need to cut them open — we buy them as they are and recover the copper properly.
Attached gearboxes and pump heads should come off if they are easy to remove, since they are largely steel or cast iron. Oil-filled units need draining before they come in.
Common questions
- Should I strip the copper out of an electric motor first?
- Generally not worth it. Cutting a motor open by hand is slow and damages the winding. We buy them whole and recover the copper mechanically.
