Scrap Copper Pipe

Copper pipe is bought as No. 1 or No. 2 copper, and which one depends on what is still on it. Clean pipe with nothing attached is No. 1. Solder, paint and brass fittings each take it down a grade.

Most of the difference is a few minutes with a hacksaw, and the brass you cut off is paid too.

How your pipe is graded

  • Clean pipe, nothing attached

No solder, paint or fittings. Light oxidation is fine.

  • Soldered joints, paint or heavy tarnish

Cut the soldered ends off and the clean lengths go back to No. 1.

  • Brass elbows, valves and unions

Cut off and kept separate, they go as mixed brass.

Getting the better grade

  1. 01Cut off every brass fitting and soldered joint.
  2. 02Pull off insulation lagging, tape and plastic coating.
  3. 03Keep clean pipe, soldered offcuts and brass in three separate bags.
  4. 04Not sure which pile something goes in? Send a photo before you sort.
